DUTCH Dried Urine Hormone Test

DUTCH Dried Urine Hormone Test
October 09, 2017 01:20 PM

If you've ever wondered what your hormones are doing, you've probably questioned what test would be best. The serum hormone test (blood) is not a great test because one cannot adequately measure the adrenal hormones in the blood and we get no information about how the hormones are broken down in the body. Similarly with saliva hormone testing, the metabolites of the different hormones are not determined. The DUTCH test is a dried urine hormone test that is able to see how your body breaks dow...Read more

What The Health Documentary Review
August 07, 2017 01:03 PM

Have you heard about the What The Health Documentary? More like What the F***. Let me save you 2 hours of your life. First off, they claim that meat is as bad as cigarettes. What matters is the quality of the meat. You ideally want organic, grass-fed meat and you don’t want to over do it! If you’re having conventional meat every day such as steak and sausages every day, then yes, that is a problem. Especially if you are eating in fast food restaurants. Not only will they use the cheapest mea...Read more

What's the deal with Coconut Oil?
June 30, 2017 05:21 PM

Recently in the news, coconut oil has been vilified. The American Heart Association claims that because coconut oil is saturated, it increases LDL or “bad” cholesterol and therefore is bad for your heart health. They recommend consuming canola or vegetable oil. This makes me cringe. Let me explain how they came to this conclusion and why I think we should be careful with what we take at face value. Not all Saturated Fats are Created Equal There are short, medium and long chain triglycerides...Read more

Four Foods to Avoid

Four Foods to Avoid
March 14, 2017 08:13 PM

Foods to Avoid in a Health Food Store These may be foods that we think of being healthy but think twice. Agave Agave is actually fructose syrup which is not good for your health (just like high fructose corn syrup). It’s highly processed and refined and thus has very little nutritional value. Stevia is a better sweetener option. Carageenan Carageenan is a food additive from red seaweed. Often, it is found in almond or non-dairy milk as well as ice cream. It’s a thickening agent that make...Read more

Are you eating your greens?

Are you eating your greens?
March 11, 2017 10:31 PM

I know, I know. Vegetables are boring. Well maybe not. Studies have shown that the more fresh vegetables one eats, the healthier you'll live. You'll lower your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, digestive issues just to name a few. No matter what kind of diet suits you (Paleo, Vegan etc), the truth is don't skimp the vegetables. But are all vegetables created equal? Sadly, no. The vegetables that give you the best bang for your buck are the green ones. Specifically,...Read more

My labour experience – the vulnerable truth

My labour experience – the vulnerable truth
October 13, 2016 12:23 PM

I have been meaning to write down my labour experience for a while now. I find myself struggling to put things on paper as I am working hard to move on from the experience. So here goes. I was one week overdue and I hadn’t felt the baby drop. The midwife was adamant that I get an ultrasound and although I was very reluctant to do so, I felt I was forced to. The 41 week ultrasound showed a condition called polyhydramnios. This is when there is too much amniotic fluid. The speculation is that ...Read more

How to Avoid a Hearing Aid

How to Avoid a Hearing Aid
October 08, 2016 05:24 PM

Age related hearing loss has been associated with low vitamin B12 and folic acid. In a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, they found that the lower the level of B12 and folic acid in the 55 women examined, the worse their hearing was. Sometimes it’s not sufficient to just take a B12 and folic acid supplement. Getting your levels in the blood tested as well as looking at how well you absorb these vitamins are very important. As we age, the amount of stomach acid produced dim...Read more
