Cardiovascular disease means that your plumbing system (blood) is becoming clogged. This clogging is referred to as atherosclerosis which is hardening of our blood vessels. This then causes the blood pressure to rise and the heart has to work that much harder. A stroke (in the brain) or a heart attack is when a critical blood vessel becomes completely occluded so that blood can no longer oxygenate and bring nutrients to the tissue. This can then lead to end organ damage such as the brain, heart and kidneys just to name a few.
No one wants to wait until they get a painful and sometimes debilitating heart attack before changing the way they eat and think.
Unfortunately, high blood pressure which is an early sign of cardiovascular disease is often nicknamed “the silent killer” because we can’t always feel it when our blood vessels are becoming clogged.
Approach
During a physical exam, we measure your blood pressure and ask you questions about your lifestyle, diet and family medical history. We also check your blood cholesterol levels (HDL, LDL, TG). This will give us a good idea about what treatment method we should use. The best treatment is prevention.
